Phased Array Ultrasonic Technique
Like other electronically enhanced methods of inspection
such as TOFD and Digital Radiography, Phase Array has been
around for several decades and has improved as advancements
in base technology have been made.
These improvements relate to advancements in composite transducer
technology and electronic data capture, manipulation and presentation.
But, despite these advances, Phased Array still suffers from
the fundamental limitations of the physics involved with conventional
'pulse echo' ultrasonic testing.
By definition, these are based upon the measurement of the
ratio of reflected energy and this ratio can be affected by
many factors other than the actual size, nature and orientation
of a potentially critical defect.
These limitations are further compounded by the fact that
this 'new technology' is made all the more convincing through
image processing and by the absolute certainty that integrity
critical defects are not often favourably oriented planar
reflectors.
The positives are that the technology provides a comprehensive
level of coverage in an efficient fashion and displays and
records what has been detected in an electronic format.
As such, it is an effective screening or detection tool which,
used in combination with supplementary techniques constitutes
an effective aid to achieving more efficient and reliable
inspection.
We have a number of personnel trained and qualified in the
use of Phased Array and would be pleased to discuss your applicational
needs.
